Clinton Hill's Mile Nine Party Brings Joy to NYC Marathon Spectators

For many in New York City, Marathon Sunday is a cherished tradition, and for Danielle Strle, it’s simply the best day of the year. Strle, the chief product officer for The Onion, donned a banana costume to cheer on runners as they sped by during the NYC Marathon. She was among a throng of enthusiastic spectators at the Mile Nine party in Clinton Hill, a lively gathering that has been a staple of the marathon for over two decades.

The Mile Nine celebration, located along Lafayette Avenue, has transformed significantly since its inception 23 years ago. What started as locals handing out bodega sandwiches has evolved into a full-fledged party complete with a grill, waffles, egg sandwiches, coffee, and orange juice. Strle reminisced about the early days, noting, "Nobody was having parties on the end of the block when we started doing this. It’s the best block for the marathon party spectator scene."

This year’s marathon took place the day after Halloween, adding a playful twist as many spectators arrived in their costumes from the night before. Strle’s banana outfit was just one of the many creative costumes seen among the crowd, which included families, friends, and local residents all there to support the runners.

The atmosphere was electric as approximately 60,000 runners participated in the race, which winds through all five boroughs before culminating in Central Park. A short distance from the Mile Nine party, another gathering took place near Emmanuel Baptist Church, where the church choir serenaded the runners and a barbecue grill added to the festive environment.

Celebrating the Spirit of Marathon Day

While the elite runners, like Andreas Almgren of Sweden and Sheila Chepkirui of Kenya, finished in just over two hours, the focus of the day was not solely on winning. For many participants, the marathon symbolizes a triumph of the human spirit, a sentiment echoed by Strle as she cheered on the diverse array of athletes passing by.

The sense of community and support was palpable, as spectators lined the streets, offering encouragement and high-fives to the runners. This vibrant celebration of endurance and camaraderie highlights the unique culture surrounding the NYC Marathon, making it a day to remember for both participants and supporters alike.

The Final Kick

The Mile Nine party exemplifies how the NYC Marathon brings people together, fostering a sense of belonging and shared experience. As the runners navigated the challenging course, the cheers and festive atmosphere provided a much-needed boost, reminding everyone involved of the joy and determination that running embodies.

As the marathon continued towards its conclusion, the energy from the spectators remained high. The combination of costumes, food, and spirited cheers created an unforgettable experience for all. Events like the Mile Nine party not only celebrate the athletes but also the community that supports them, showcasing the heart of what makes the NYC Marathon a beloved event each year.
