Chepkirui and Almgren Triumph at New York City Marathon

Kenyan Sheila Chepkirui made a triumphant return to the New York City Marathon, reclaiming her women's title with a time of 2 hours, 24 minutes, and 36 seconds. Meanwhile, Sweden's Andreas Almgren marked his debut in the marathon with an impressive victory in the men's race, finishing in 2:06:01.

Chepkirui's victory was a hard-fought one. She broke away from the lead pack alongside defending champion Hellen Obiri with about four miles remaining. While Chepkirui maintained her lead, Obiri, who had previously set a course record, found herself in a fierce battle for second place. Ultimately, American Jess McClain sprinted past Obiri in the final moments, finishing just a second ahead with a time of 2:24:42.

"The last mile was really tricky and I had to be patient because I knew Hellen was really strong," Chepkirui said. Her strategy paid off as she pushed through to the finish line, celebrating her return to the top of the podium two years after her last victory.

In the men's race, Almgren showcased remarkable skill and composure, finishing ahead of Italy's Yemaneberhan Crippa by 13 seconds. As he navigated the challenging course, Almgren pulled away from defending champion Benson Kipruto with just a mile to go, displaying confidence as he encouraged the crowd with waves of his arms.

Almgren Reflects on Historic Victory

"When Benson started picking up the pace with 5k left, I just thought, 'I've got the legs today,'" Almgren reflected on his performance. His win makes him the first European man to triumph in New York in three decades, and he expressed his excitement about the experience. "It's better than anything I could have ever imagined," he added.

The Run-In

The marathon took place under ideal conditions, attracting both seasoned runners and enthusiastic spectators. In the men's wheelchair race, Swiss athlete Marcel Hug clinched his eighth New York victory in a thrilling finish, crossing the line just a second ahead of American Daniel Romanchuk with a time of 1:28:14. Hug's compatriot Catherine Debrunner dominated the women's wheelchair race, finishing in 1:40:02, while Tatyana McFadden secured second place.

As the runners crossed the finish line, the atmosphere was electric, with many celebrating personal bests and the joy of competition. The New York City Marathon continues to be a highlight on the international running calendar, showcasing not just elite performances but the spirit of the running community.
