Navigating the New York City Marathon: Street Closures and Tips

The New York City Marathon is set to transform the city into a vibrant hub of activity on Sunday, with the Upper West Side experiencing some of the most significant impacts. As runners and their supporters flood into the area, residents should prepare for extensive road closures and crowded streets, particularly around Central Park, where the marathon culminates.

The race kicks off early, beginning with the Men’s Wheelchair Division at 8 a.m. and continuing throughout the day. Traffic disruptions will persist long after the last runner crosses the finish line, with many major avenues remaining closed until 9:30 p.m. or later. For anyone trying to travel through the city, the best advice is to stay put if possible and allow extra time for any necessary journeys.

The Upper West Side is uniquely burdened by marathon-related restrictions. Not only does it serve as a crucial part of the race route, but it also hosts the Family Reunion area in Central Park, where exhausted finishers reconnect with their supporters. This area spans West 69th to 71st Streets between Columbus Avenue and Central Park West, operating from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on race day. Given the expected crowds, those not involved in post-race reunions should consider avoiding this zone altogether.

Drivers looking to navigate through Central Park will find their options limited. The East, West, and Center drives were closed starting Saturday, October 31, and will remain shut through Sunday. Additionally, Central Park South between Fifth and Eighth Avenues will experience closures from 8 to 10:30 a.m. on race day.

Understanding Key Road Closures Ahead

Crosstown transverses, which typically offer quick routes across Manhattan, will also be unavailable for much of the day. The 65th and 79th Street transverses will be closed from midnight to 9:30 p.m., while the 96th Street transverse will shut down from 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Central Park South from Fifth Avenue to Columbus Circle will be inaccessible from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

The most significant restrictions will affect the main north-south corridors in the neighborhood. Central Park West will be closed from Columbus Circle to 81st Street from midnight through 10:30 p.m., marking the longest closure of the day. Additional closures on Central Park West will affect segments from 59th to 77th Streets and 77th to 86th Streets, both from 5 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Columbus Avenue and Broadway will also see closures from 6 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on the same segments.

One Last Stride

For local residents, navigating around Lincoln Center and Columbus Circle will be particularly challenging due to the extensive road closures. Parking will be equally difficult, as bans are in effect from Saturday through Sunday on Central Park West and surrounding streets. Those who parked in these areas before the restrictions began should check on their vehicles promptly to avoid fines or towing.

The atmosphere on the Upper West Side will be electric, filled with the energy of runners and spectators alike. However, the marathon's logistics can turn simple errands into lengthy endeavors. The city has provided a comprehensive list of street closures online, making it essential for anyone planning to travel through the area to review it beforehand. Opting for walking or subway travel will likely be more efficient than driving, and those meeting runners at the finish should designate a specific meeting spot in advance. A little preparation can help ensure that race day remains a celebration rather than a scramble.
