Nichola Sheridan Achieves Personal Best at Melbourne Marathon

Nichola Sheridan made headlines by finishing third in the women's race at the Melbourne Marathon, showcasing her impressive progress as a runner who only debuted in the marathon scene in 2024. The 29-year-old, originally from County Meath but now based in Sydney, achieved a personal best time of 2:29.13, a remarkable four-minute improvement over her previous best.

In this year’s Melbourne Marathon, Sheridan was outpaced only by Sinead Diver, a seasoned competitor who has represented Australia for over a decade. Last year, Sheridan completed the Dublin Marathon with a time of 2:39:56, and earlier this summer, she finished the Gold Coast Marathon in 2:33:26. Her latest performance marks her first sub-2:30 marathon finish, a milestone that she celebrated with great enthusiasm.

Reflecting on her race experience, Sheridan expressed her excitement to RTÉ Sport, stating, "I couldn't be but over the moon." However, she admitted to having second thoughts about participating in the marathon, considering switching to the half marathon due to her performance in the Gold Coast event. "I was gearing up for the Gold Coast where my aim was to run a sub-2:30, but things didn't click," she explained. Despite doubts leading up to the race, she persevered, blocking out negative thoughts and drawing energy from the supportive crowd.

Electric Atmosphere and Supportive Crowd

Sheridan noted that the atmosphere in Melbourne was electric, with Irish supporters cheering her on throughout the course. "I got to 35k, kept missing all of my water bottles. I was still feeling so good, got to 40k and I knew I was on the way home," she recounted. Her race strategy paid off as she moved from eighth place to third, illustrating the unpredictable nature of marathon running.

One Last Stride

Settling in Australia, Sheridan appreciates the culture and community, stating, "I've taken to it like a duck to water. Really easy to make friends here and my running has taken a jump." She has applied for permanent residency but remains committed to representing Ireland in future competitions. Sheridan is not currently part of the Irish high-performance system, yet she has her sights set on competing at the World Championships in Beijing and the LA Olympic Games.

As she reflects on her rapid improvement since her marathon debut, Sheridan remains optimistic about her future. "I think the sky is the limit. I'm a positive person but for now I just want to take things day by day," she concluded. With her trajectory in the sport, it will be exciting to see how far she can go.
