Stranded Runners Rescued from Moab 240 Ultramarathon After Storm

About 70 runners and volunteers participating in Utah's Moab 240 ultramarathon were evacuated from the rugged outdoor race course on Sunday after being stranded overnight by a heavy rainstorm that hit the area. The San Juan County Sheriff's Office reported that it worked closely with race organizers to assist the stranded runners, who were unable to leave the affected areas safely.

Destination Trail, the organization managing the race, provided updates throughout the day, confirming that buses were evacuating the last group of participants stuck at an aid station near Bridger Jack Mesa in the Bear Ears National Monument. In a social media post, Destination Trail expressed sympathy for the runners, acknowledging the extensive training and travel many had undertaken to participate. "We know this isn't how anyone hoped Moab 240 would go. Sometimes the weather has other plans, and when it does, everyone’s safety has to come first," they stated.

Before the storm hit, race officials had already delivered additional supplies to the aid station, which included heated tents, hot meals, and ample water to support the stranded runners and volunteers. The Moab 240 ultramarathon covers a grueling 241.8 miles through diverse terrains, including deserts, canyons, and mountain ranges, all while showcasing the stunning landscapes of Canyonlands and Arches National Parks.

Race Start and Weather Challenges

The race commenced on Friday in Moab, Utah, and is scheduled to conclude on Tuesday. However, the severe weather was a result of the remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel, which made landfall in Baja California and continued to impact the Western United States with heavy rain and flooding.

The Cooldown

As the storm brought significant rainfall to Utah, it also caused disruptions in other states, including California, where some beaches were closed due to unusually high ocean water levels. The combination of ocean swells and prolonged weather effects from the storm has led to widespread flooding across the region.

The Moab 240 is not just a test of endurance but also a showcase of the resilience of the ultrarunning community, which has come together in the face of adversity. While this year's race may not have gone as planned, the commitment to safety and the spirit of the participants remain strong.
