Eliud Kipchoge Sets Course Record at Melbourne Marathon at 41

Eliud Kipchoge, the legendary two-time Olympic champion, showcased his enduring prowess by winning the Melbourne Marathon in a remarkable course record time of 2:09:10. This victory marks Kipchoge's 17th career win in the marathon distance and his first since triumphing at the Berlin Marathon in 2023.

After crossing the finish line, Kipchoge remarked, "I believe that my body is still peaking - still able to compete with the next generation." At 41, he continues to defy age, expressing joy at competing alongside younger athletes. "The oldest athlete is still competing but I am happy to run with the Gen Zs," he added, emphasizing his commitment to the sport and the inspiration he hopes to provide.

The Melbourne Marathon course was notably unique, featuring stretches along the Australian Formula One track at Albert Park and culminating inside the historic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Kipchoge reflected on the experience, stating, "On the course, it was really wonderful, I enjoyed seeing people standing, cheering, and shouting my name." He even took a moment to wave to the fans as he slowed down inside the MCG, highlighting the connection he feels with the crowd.

In the men's race, Australian Thomas do Canto finished as the runner-up with a time of 2:10:35, while compatriot Reece Edwards secured third place. In the women's category, New Zealand's Camille French claimed victory with a time of 2:28:25, followed by Australian Sinead Diver and Ireland's Nichola Sheridan.

Kipchoge's Global Marathon Mission

Kipchoge's win in Melbourne is part of a broader mission as he embarks on a world tour to complete marathons on all seven continents, including Antarctica, over the span of two years. Each marathon aims to raise funds for the Eliud Kipchoge Foundation, which focuses on education, environmental sustainability, and health initiatives.

Across the Line

Kipchoge is widely regarded as one of the greatest long-distance runners in history, boasting two Olympic marathon gold medals, a silver and bronze in the 5000m, a world title, and 12 World Marathon Major victories. His groundbreaking achievement in 2019, when he became the first person to break the two-hour marathon barrier under special conditions in Vienna, remains a significant milestone in the sport.

Kipchoge's performance in Melbourne not only adds to his illustrious career but also serves as a testament to his relentless pursuit of excellence and his ability to inspire runners of all ages.
